Do you think the Taino could've survived Aztec expansion into the Caribbean?
Just like in real life, the Mughal would be fairly powerful.
As for the Taino, the fice tribes probably could've put aside their differances to defend their land, much like how Thebes, Athens, and Sparta all united to defend Greece from Persian invaders.
I'm not sure how certain we can be on the power of different nations based on history. In the 1500s, Dark Age Europe would be the last place you'd think would become a world superpower (what with the Ottomans and the Chinese going strong). Who in the 1700s would have thought that the US would become the world superpower?
If I were to choose, I think China would be the most certain candidate for being a powerful nation. Real world history shows China consistently being one of the greatest civilisations in the world for thousands of years since its founding. Of course, there have been brief hiatuses (on historical timescales), but overall it almost seems as if it's the natural order of things for China to be at the top (to paraphrase Kim Stanley Robinson).
I agree. In fact, I think we're really underestimating the sheer amount of change which these nations would undergo over time. In our world, there's a marked transition between "the old age" and the so-called Modern Era at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, but if no such world-shaking event occurs in Atra Mors, or at least not one that effects the whole world, then I imagine the denizens of the world would have no concept of a modern era.
What I mean is, there wouldn't be any time which signals rapid change or onward from when the world always remains the same, but rather, historical patterns will carry on without the interference of Europeans and cultures will evolve, borders will change and the Earth will continue spinning. I guess what I'm trying to say is, nothing will change and yet change will continue. If that makes sense, explain it to me and then the two of us will understand.
Okay, I'm afraid that I can't continue working on the maps. The only place I can work on it is at school during my Graphic Arts class, and my grades have been falling behind, so I've got to focus on what's important. I hope you understand, and I deeply apologize for the inconvenience. As soon as I get my computer fixed, I'll get Photoshop on it and resume work on fixing up North America.
That's fine. I probably won't be around much until about a week or so after Christmas. However, I plan to return with a design for one of the 'original' nations planned for Europe.
I have returned! I hope everyone has had, and are still having, a merry Christmas.
As promised, I have designed an 'original' minor nation to add to Atra Mors Europe. They began as one of the many fragmented Turko-Mongol hordes that persisted in Central Asia and Eastern Europe for centuries after the collapse of the Mongol Empire. After the Black Death, they travelled up the Volga River to found an ambitious new Khanate from the remains of the now-defunct Russian Empire.
However, they ended up on the wrong side of history as the much more powerful Golden Horde had similar ideas, and began to spread west. This cut off the Volga River to the south. With no hope of being able to take the Russian land from the Golden Horde, they had no choice but to continue north along the Pechora River. Eventually they came out into the cold Barents Sea and attempted to settle the nearby island of Novaya Zemlya, but the island was too cold and hostile and many people died during the winter.
In a last-ditch attempt at survival, many sailed out across the Barents Sea and reached the north-western coast of Scandinavia, where they settled at the foot of the Kolen Mountains. When it comes to these Turko-Mongol hordes, it seems to be tradition to name them after their leader our founder, so this minor nation will be called the Evren Khanate, and will occupy the narrow band of land between the Kolen Mountains and the Norwegian Sea.
I'm assuming that there will not somehow be a Chinese colony in Scandinavia. Also, I mentioned a westward expansion of the Golden Horde; this may just have been a temporary action by the Golden Horde before they subside or they are distracted by something more urgent, so it shouldn't affect any plans for the Golden Horde in the long run.
Welcome back, Robbo.
Though kinda impossible, it'd be so amazing to have a Turko-Mongol khanate on an Arctic island! Still, Scandinavia's a good place to have them. I like this nation, it's well though out.
Now's probably a good time to inform you that I'll be on vacation in Mexico for the next week or so and I'm not going to have Internet access. I'll return to work on this project when I come back. Belated Merry Christmas, and a semi-belated happy New Year! (depending on your interpretation of "happy new year")
Hope no one objects to me starting the new thread. Link: Thread:4818
What do you think?
