The United Commonwealth of the Australian States, commonly known as Australia or abbreviated as the UCAS, is a republican union of the Australian states.

History[]

The United Commonwealth of the Australian States was created in 1901 following the approval of the Australia Act 1900 by Queen Victoria. This document authorised the Federation of the Australian colonies. However, this Federation would remain under the rule of the British Crown.

In 1901, the Australian colonies Federated to become the Commonwealth of Australia. Many, however, still thought of themselves as British, rather than Australian. During World War I, Australia began to build up its own national identity: that of bravery and fearlessness, as shown in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915 against the Ottoman Empire.

In 1920, Australian citizens began to desert their British heritage and support the Australian national identity. Eventually, people began to support total Australian independence from Britain. At the point where Australia and Britain were about to go to war against each other, King George VI called for a conference. This fateful conference, the Congress of London, was to decide Australia's future.

Australian delegates argued that Australia was being ruled by Britain, which was over five thousand miles away, although this was not technically true, as the Australians ruled themselves. Nevertheless, at the end of the negotiations in November 1920, the British representatives relented, and King George VI authorised the creation of the Republic of Australia Act 1920, otherwise known as the Australian Declaration of Independence. On 26th January 1921, the United Commonwealth of the Australian States was created.

Following the Tropics Crisis of 1987, thousands of immigrants and refugees from the tropics regions of the United States and Indonesia began streaming into Australia and Papua New Guinea. Abiding to the Help Crisis Refugees Act of 1984, the Australian government welcomed these newcomers into the population. And so, the Australian population skyrocketed to over 40 million.
